I was working on this poster in November 2019 for the “My Finland poster 2020” contest. I had a lot of ideas on the topic “Helsinki” but was kind of stuck with all of them when suddenly the Finnish National Football Team qualified for the European Championship 2020. I am a huge football fan and spontaneously decided to work a tribute into the poster.

I went with the Finland flag colours blue and white only (well, almost) and I loved that it put Helsinki into the season in which I did my first ever trip to this beautiful city: Winter.

However, it’s really up to you what you want to see in the poster. Is it winter? Or maybe a blue and white summer night? Is that snow? Or confetti? Do you see floating ice in the water? Or is that a reflection of the Helsinki archipelago? And who is that hardy Finn walking through the storm? And what makes him so happy? You decide.

Surely travel posters can’t simply remain a cry from the past?

Absolutely not. We live in a completely visual world where the picture is stronger than ever. That’s why the following question hit us: How would contemporary artists depict Finland of today?

We could not let that thought go, so since 2016 we annually arrange an international travel poster contest for different regions in Finland, and we’ve also asked specific graphic designers and artists to create new Finnish travel posters for us.

So now Finland once again attracts travellers with glamour and cries of joy from paradise. With the help of the travel poster!
